Happy Black History Month!
BHM is a whole entire month dedicated to learning more about Black history and culture, celebrating the achievements of Black people around the world and their contributions to British society, and putting the
spotlight on racial injustice that Black people in the UK might experience today.
It was first recognised in the UK in 1987 to mark the 150th anniversary of Caribbean emancipation, the 25th anniversary of the Organisation of African
Unity, the commemoration of the birth of well
renowned Jamaican activist Marcus Garvey and to recognise the work of anti-racism community activists of that time.
It was started by Dr Maulana Karenga and Akyaaba Addai-Sebo. Their vision is still alive today - with there being PLENTLY to do around london to celebrate Black History Month
- starting from right here at your very own university! There will be a handful of events throughout the month, so please do not hesitate to get involved in this incredible opportunity to celebrate Black lives!
